@violet zlib is a streaming compression algorithm

chunky zlib is a streaming streaming compression algorithm algorithm

@ben I know :3. Though, really, it's DEFLATE that's the algorithm and ZLib that's the defacto spec.

@violet zlib is an algorithm that uses deflate with some metadata

chunky zlib is an algorithm that uses zlib with some metadata

@violet I remember trying to figure out how to do this and the people were like "are you absolutely sure you don't mean deflate" and I was like "why do you expect Dwarf Fortress to suddenly make sense"

Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@ben I mean, I think I know what that extra metadata might be, it sounds like it's probably chunk-addressing so that you can just skip reading the bits that don't matter.

If it really doesn't make sense, then it'd be something that was born of Tarn maybe not having a great sense of how ZLib might be made to work, but I know he's a very smart man. So that means that where it fails to make sense, it's a hilariously complicated place to fail to make sense... Idk, you know way more than me friend.

@violet have you seen what Dwarf Fortress 23a did to its save files? dwarffortresswiki.org/index.ph

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@ben Is it still that bad?

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@violet thankfully, no

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@ben I don't think you know how happy I am to hear that.

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@violet the game even has a structure in it nowadays for no other reason than to point out where global variables are for reverse engineering

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@ben Yeah, I'm glad that Toady went ahead with making it easier for you folx on the dfhack project.

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@violet @ben Being very smart doesn't mean you have to understand how to use stuff properly!

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@petra @violet honestly it's more fun this way

re: Just stop reading after the first paragraph, since that's where it stops making sense

@petra @ben Yeah, but I don't want to underestimate a man who's building a whole world with dwarves and exploding cats. Also cannibalistic elves.
