Possibly unpopular opinion

EvoPsych is a lie. None of the field's claims are verifiable and it's extremely often just used to justify bigotry and essentialist, binary views on gender. It's the phrenology of the modern era.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

This opinion is surprisingly popular considering I studied Psychology and my professors sure seemed to think the field was viable. o:

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone I endorse this opinion

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone I'm old enough to remember when Ben Radford wrote an article for Center for Inquiry about how since vervet monkey babies had gender - based preferences for toy trucks vs toy pots & pans, traditional gender roles were innate

Possibly unpopular opinion

@SallyStrange @slightlyflightyone oh god...this is like...the worst take.

Possibly unpopular opinion

@AudreyJune @slightlyflightyone you would think so, but there are worse ones. Something about berries, the color red, and makeup also made the rounds, and I haven't even paid much attention to it since 2012 or so

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone i find myself suspectimg that there may be merit to some of it but that as usual white dudes on the internet took it and ran with it to places it doesn't work at all in order to justify their own bigotry and eugenicist ideas

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@FuchsiaShock As someone who has immersed herself in the field, it really isn't useful at all for anything other than convincing folx to take psychology seriously as a "real science" despite being seen as softer to a lot of critters.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone that would explain the bro-ey feeling i get off it

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone My largest critique of the field of Psychology after leaving it is that there's a lot of unearned confidence about many of the claims they/we made.

It gets criticized for being a soft science for a reason. They tend to lean heavy on general conclusions made from a handful of studies, but there's not a lot of drive to reexamine studies or assumptions as a matter of discipline.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@sandrockcstm You were a psychologist?

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone I was a licensed professional counselor.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@sandrockcstm Interesting. o.o

That’s what I was going for before I shifted directions. Briefly to LCSW, and now Peer Wellness Specialist.

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone and on top of that it's shitty prehistorical fanfic

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@amydentata Yeah. I mentioned it was unverifiable, unfalsifiable nonsense, yeah?

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone at least be good prehistorical fanfic with some hot sex scenes! instead it's all boring cishetmono nonsense

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone @fructose_dealer evopsych, the clickbait of science

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone You won't get any arguments from me. Or pzmyers@octodon.social

Possibly unpopular opinion

@RecursiveRabbit I didn't know PZ had shared opinions on this. Good on him. 😊

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone Yeah, he's had a lot of posts about how nonsensical it gets, along with its tendency to blame very recent cultural phenomena on caveman genes.

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone I think this might be the consensus opinion outside of the field.

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone Seconded. It's the Myers-Briggs of evolutionary science.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone true. fucken. story.

Possibly unpopular opinion

@slightlyflightyone My favorite was "queerness exists because people who don't have kids spread genes by taking care of family". Like dude, my family drives me up a wall every time I have to interact with them.

re: Possibly unpopular opinion

@forAll52 Lol. Right?
