so apparently updating the name on your IEEE membership requires documentation from the government
welp
@rey WTF?
IEEE has always struck me as being full of itself. This confirms that and has a large plate of "asshole" for dessert.
@rey and they do server-side validation on the Title and Gender fields, so no "Mx." for me :p
but strangely they never asked to see my PE license before letting me update the Suffix field 🤔
@rey Oh heck. I hate when organizations do that. Some things have even my SSN but are afraid that me putting “Renata” in the name field would prevent them from knowing who I am. If all it is is the name they use to communicate with you and others, then it should be the one that you *actually use*.
@rey
What?? I changed my name in 2001 (got married) and in 2013 (divorce final), and I don't remember IEEE being difficult either time. Now eBay in 2001 had a lot of hoops! I did get my name change request down to a form letter with a copy of the applicable certificate, tho'.
However, IEEE should NOT be the gatekeeper of valid reasons to change names. I'm sorry I didn't keep records of what I had to do to get my name change, but I'll join you for WTF-ing - officially to IEEE if it would help!
@rey wow
