my dad mentioned over dinner that he voted for a republican for state assembly. because "he likes farmers". the look on his face when I said "but does he like ME?" was of shock and horror. like he clearly had never considered that.

I wish I could be surprised by it

just looked it up and yup, that assemblyman did indeed vote against new york's gender expression non discrimination act 🙃🙃🙃

the more I think about this, the worse it gets. I came out as bi my freshman year in college. he has had an entire decade of knowing he has a queer kid, yet he still didn't think to find out if this republican somehow had a decent record on protecting my rights before voting

not even that he looked and decided other issues were more important. he just... didn't look. never even wondered. it's not even that my rights aren't a priority for his vote, but that they don't even factor in. I know there are way worse parents out there, who are much more malicious, but it still hurts

did I mention the bit where, after being called out, he said "well, he's a republican in the assembly, bet they don't even let him through the door"

which is rich, coming from someone who's always preaching the importance of local elections 🙃
