Hey Mastodon: which instances would you recommend for queer & trans women and nonbinary folk? (Particularly those admin'd by that demographic)
Thinking about pitching an article to Autostraddle about Mastodon and want to give the readers some instances to check out!
@creatrixtiara Like, obvs welcome here in Kitty.Town, but we are run by this cislady and I definitely understand wanting an instance run by someone closer to that demo. 😁
@creatrixtiara I've been wondering this for my friends who are wary of the monoculture feel
Not very accurate, but gives some workable suggestions
(also probably worth doing some searches on that thingydoo that shows you a random example of toots from a specific instance, in case you're wondering about specific places being suitable or not)
@sydneyfalk @creatrixtiara yes this:
http://www.unmung.com/mastoview
Very good to make sure a tag is not ironically applied...
(and forgot to mention, upside's thingydoo he mentioned here gives very interesting information worth looking at)
@creatrixtiara there's also lgbt.io? i don't have any personal experience with it but theoretically seems like a good option
@tcql @creatrixtiara Every user from there that I have encountered has been nice. ☺
@creatrixtiara off the top of my head there's witches.town, cybre.space, computerfairi.es, glitch.social, vulpine.club, social.wxcafe.net, soc.ialis.me, and icosahedron.website. they all have queer admins and open reg (at least periodically) and they have varying tones, communities, moderation styles, etc. I usually point people I know to join witches.town or cybre.space.
@creatrixtiara it uh does occur to me that 90% of the ones I names are also furry instances >_>
I think the majority of queer admin'd instances are also furry admin'd...
most of these are good recs IME (and some I can't really speak to, I haven't looked at several of them), but of course I'd suggest looking at them all for yourself with the thing upside linked for looking at example tootstreams before you pick the list as such
@shel @creatrixtiara IIRC, the admin of Computer Fairies really loves 80s synthesizers, in case that makes a difference one way or the other
@creatrixtiara kitty.town and witches.town seem pretty cool. i like selfy.army, but i don't know if @catalina wants to deal with an influx of new members
@alys @creatrixtiara @catalina
that is a REALLY good point, now that I think of it
you may want to consider contacting admins about being in this piece, and/or explaining the niche aspects of some of the less-heavy-user-base-ready instances, and/or even sorting the list (if there's a LOT of instances you decide to mention) so that the first five are the ones most ready for a big influx
not to dictate, only suggesting
(tho contact would seem minimum polite)
@sydneyfalk @alys @catalina oh yeah for sure!
@alys @creatrixtiara yeah, i don't think i can handle moderating a large instance yet
@creatrixtiara i'm on anticapitalist.party, it's pretty cool
@creatrixtiara hi our instance is admin'd by 3 trans ppl: 1 woman and 2 nb
@creatrixtiara (chitter.xyz to be clear)
@creatrixtiara there are a few here on Octodon (me included).
I'd say it's great if they want a pretty generalistic and relaxed instance but open and welcoming of queer/trans/nb people.
@creatrixtiara *seconds the recommendation of computerfairi.es*
I think you just have to mention witches.town, bc it's so popular among queer folk.
Smaller instances run by queer women are:
computerfairi.es
cute.group
queer.town
@creatrixtiara witches.town or kitty.town :D
@creatrixtiara queer.party!
@creatrixtiara toot.cat was recommended to me as one of the admins is black and trans. I've not been disappointed by either toot.cat or kitty.town.
@creatrixtiara @AvaJarvis oh hi that's me!
@creatrixtiara I would say soc.ialis.me
@creatrixtiara just to reinforce the list you probably already have! my recommendation for this particular thing is
- toot.cat
- witches.town
- glitch.social
@creatrixtiara toot.cat
