I wonder if it's possible to adapt Mastodon for role-playing purposes
like have an instance that's its own world with its own rules and each user is a character in this world
maybe change the codebase a bit to incorporate rp-friendly stuff
@creatrixtiara Sure. People do it in IRC. Can't be any harder than that.
@creatrixtiara Had an idea for a Dice rolling bot a while back.
@creatrixtiara it never got off the ground, but @Trev was considering making a mastodon instance for a shadowrun RP
@denjin @creatrixtiara I'll set it up when my group starts playing again.
My GF pondered this idea herself though she didn't voice it as thoroughly.
It could be cool.
@creatrixtiara I don't see why not, this instance could be close and have invite only registration and federate with instances they choose (white list)
@creatrixtiara that could be fun.
@creatrixtiara use octothorps for locations, encounters... definitely possible.

It would be hell to administrate, I think.
@creatrixtiara Yes!! I want this!!!
@creatrixtiara Use hashtags for story and scene. Add a dice roller, moderation tools that allow the originator of a hashtag to strip that tag from existing posts as a way of dealing with party crashers. This sounds feasible.
@creatrixtiara And a variant Reply button that copies hashtags instead of usernames, to help people avoid making typos.
@creatrixtiara wow I hadn't thought of this - you could have some cleverly implemented bots to handle dice rolls and such too... cool idea o:
@eurasierboy @creatrixtiara Is there any spec or examples of how to write a bot like that? I saw the Ambasasdor bot on Github, but I think we need something that can respond to people who toot at it.
@teslas_moustache @creatrixtiara I can imagine there's something out there but bots are outside of my realm - maybe someone can chime in with some ideas :3
@teslas_moustache @eurasierboy @creatrixtiara I would financially support anyone making strides towards implementing such a RP fork.
@creatrixtiara @eurasierboy @teslas_moustache I'm a student of meager means however. Think very committed Patreon-patron.
@TheDistinction wouldn't really require a fork of Mastodon (which is very good news for people who want this).
The bots would just be ordinary accounts connected to a headless client and respond automatically.
It's actually really quite straightforward.
@piecritic @TheDistinction @eurasierboy @creatrixtiara
OK. So, I am kind of bad at starting code stuff, and really bad at finishing code stuff, but I'm pretty good at helping. So if someone wants to do this, I'll pitch in however I can.
@teslas_moustache @eurasierboy @creatrixtiara Hmm, I have an open-source art bot, but this would have to run differently. Mine just runs on a schedule using a cronjob but that kind of thing would have to be alive to respond to requests.
@Vavassor @eurasierboy @creatrixtiara I wrote a dice roller bash script called ChooseYourWeapon https://github.com/teslasmoustache/chooseyourweapon
@teslas_moustache @eurasierboy @creatrixtiara so basically your bot would be a full headless Mastodon client.
Quite a lot of libraries are appearing for connecting to the API, and lightly wrapping that with an RP response library shouldn't be much trouble.
@eurasierboy @creatrixtiara @piecritic I think a Steven Universe one would be awesome. you could have pink-diamond.space, yellow-diamond.space, and blue-diamond.space as separate forces against beach-city.town
@creatrixtiara Ooh, this sounds fun. I know people do have social media accounts for characters on occasion; I think we could already set up an instance with the plan to contain a diagetic world. What new features would you want to change to make RP easier?
it's interesting to hear from the diced-based RPG crowd about this because I was thinking of Tumblr/forum RPGs that have no dice but are primarily storytelling based. But yeah there's definitely room to adapt!
@creatrixtiara there are a few systems that have diceless arbitration mechanics.
@creatrixtiara funny I was thinking the same thing Yesterday. I haven't played RPGs in many years but I can see how it might be fun. A text-based MMORPG?
@creatrixtiara @Tryphon a kind of MUD ;) some bots should be added for some characters ...
@creatrixtiara that's an awesome idea actually
@creatrixtiara there is a Star Trek holodeck instance that is built for exactly that...
@creatrixtiara tenforward.social (had to go back in my timeline to find it!)
@creatrixtiara if you could have pinned toots, that'd be a good place for a character sheet or a thread with various similar referencey stuff or backstory things . . . .
@creatrixtiara That's pretty interesting. Like maybe you could have a weather bot or other stuff like that, too. Depending on how open or curated or improvey you wanted to be.
