I think sex/gender is like the constellations.
Stars are real, their relative positions as seen from Earth are real, our history of mapping the night sky really happened and all that.
But it is also true that different societies have come up with different constellations, and the stars are actually far apart and have no particular connection with each other, and in another place/time, there would be different constellations—or none at all. They don't exist separate from society.
Also, parents sent me a package and actually used my real name on the address! That's a first!
