the spirit of emacs is actually still out there
it just looks like folks with that inclination end up using lua and awesomewm and things like that

@Kat maybe? if you're okay with learning emacs lisp, you can do a LOT with emacs!
i do wonder if there's something similar out there in spirit that does use lua. maybe look at neovim?
