what's not often taught is that, if you really like someone, you might start borrowing their metaphors for things. and then later, perhaps, their way of thinking. but always in a way that suits you, without even thinking about it

in a sense, we really are all eachother.

we live in eachothers heads, and we are the memories of ourselves.

and, well, if you really understand that... you can start playing around with that phenomenon. and you will never lose yourself because you remember yourself, but you become different because you remember yourself with others. all of those experiences and stories.

and this is something that happens, without us even knowing it most of the time. this is how personal growth works.

and, heh, the self is both a hell of an illusion and also the realest thing that ever exists.

be not afraid!

in fact here's an even spicier take...

headmates, alters, memories, stories, concepts, ideas, dreams and imaginings, even gods and symbols... the lines between all of those has all but collapsed, or been shown to be far more interesting and interrelated. i have seen too much over too many otherwise unrelated fields of study. too many similarities and patterns.

@KitRedgrave AT Fields are a fake idea, there is no hard boundary between one person and another

infohazard, identity fuckery

@KitRedgrave
at this point I've come to the conclusion that minds are the lenses that our memories form an identity through, and that memory is the base unit of existing

re: infohazard, identity fuckery

@marlyn @KitRedgrave a long, long time ago, I wrote a poem, that starts:

"I am a metaphor.
I am the medium through which I invent myself.
I am a verb.
As long as I am, I am being.
I am a doorway.
My self is the gateway for everything."

there's another line, "moments of now and now becoming," that I dreamed at around the same time, and it's kind of the same thing. basically I think of my self, all selves, as being the eye of a needle, the current present moment, through which the unguessable futures and everything we experience are pulled to become the nonexistent pasts of every form of memory and record. this concept is... I can't concentrate on it for too long or I feel like I'm starting to slip into something, and I don't know what I'd slip into, but I'm afraid that if I did I wouldn't come back, so I always pull myself out.

in a more pragmatic sense, I remember that for the longest time I held off on antidepressants because I believed the line "psych meds turn you into a different person." when I finally got on one that worked for me, I learned that statement is literally true: psych meds turned me into a person *who isn't constantly struggling with crippling depression*, and it turns out I really like being this person instead. ;)

(also tagging @Oneironott on this, heh)

re: infohazard, identity fuckery

@troodon @marlyn @KitRedgrave @Oneironott im not even high and im reelin!!

the multiverse of Runeoh says "hello"

@catgirl you have to really see those connections for yourself before you get it

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@KitRedgrave Also, to put it bluntly, being aware of this and informed is -also- how you don't lose yourself to delusion.

If you've seen how the Matrix is put together, you can't ever fully forget it and thus stop falling for it.

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@Kyresti yeah! it's a frightening yet liberating thing to really internalize

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@Kyresti @KitRedgrave If you hear me blabbing about how "I can't talk you to the answer, but i can guide folks to the experience" it's... part of this ^^
Once you ~Experience~ it and feel what all of this looks like,
well, like my sib said, it's like the matix. You can't unexperience it :P

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@Kyresti @KitRedgrave "Being Aware of the Breadcrumb Trail" is an important skill, i think, also. There are anchors around this place, and....
... well it's like a safeword. Among the obvious reason of safety in order to bring yourself back up, it's also immensely useful for allowing yourself to let -go- [and still have your way back]

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@Oneironott @Kyresti being able to actually guide is a useful skill too. i'm still too excited and willing to just throw all this out there, and it's ... kinda terrifying to see some people react so badly to it actually.

@KitRedgrave "we live in a house made of each other, and if that seems weird it's 'cause it is"

But more, we live in selves made of each other. And that's /extra/ weird. <3

@KitRedgrave (also why I'm falling apart right now. I need other people to bring out the me that's worth knowing.)

re: infohazard, identity fuckery, followup

@KitRedgrave Please elaborate or tell me where I should read more? Am super curious.

infohazard, identity fuckery

@KitRedgrave you can just @ me :P

the compressed Lorxus in your head still says hello.

infohazard, identity fuckery

@CoronaCoreanici you in particular were an important catalyst for that understanding and i thank you a lot.

and, well, i've gotten out of my own way since then

infohazard, identity fuckery

@KitRedgrave sounds like you need to read some j.butler

or freud :P

infohazard, identity fuckery

@LadyKIBI the thing about reading is that it's great for priming you for it, but it in itself isn't enough to really get it. at least for me

infohazard, identity fuckery

@KitRedgrave which makes one wonder as to the utility of social media posts :P

but no what i'm saying is that now that you get it, you might find new meaning in those old readings

infohazard, identity fuckery

@LadyKIBI i mean, i just said what the utility is. it's to prime you for things, get you thinking, but it cannot all be in a space like this :p

oh yeah. there is so much i wanna reread with this shiny new lens that's finally coalesced

@KitRedgrave also i'm going to back up to this post and just vaguely point at myself
it happens, but it's... not a bad thing if you go into it willingly

@Oneironott i endeavor to show people it's a phenomenon at all, so they can willingly lean into it or not if they so choose

@KitRedgrave I recall a meme the other day that was essentially "wait, it's all memetic" "always was" and i've been thinking about it a lot

(it didn't use memetic but i've been trying to find the term for 10 minutes so i'm done)

@KitRedgrave It's not always pleasant so i can see why folks react badly, but it's something that also happens whether we like it or not, but in being aware of it and how we can control our surroundings/world, it can actually be a rather astoundingly beautiful thing too
