watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

Okay so after watching Avatar: The Last Airbender (see: mastodon.technology/@ashfurrow ) I’ve started watching The Legend of Korra. It’s uhhh different haha 😅

Things I dislike:

- The technology progressed, like, several hundred years in a snap. But that’s part of, like, suspension of disbelief or whatever. Still.
- Polar Bear Dog is creepy.
- Feels very... season one-y so far.

Things I like:

- J.K. Simmons

I’ve finished the first seven episodes and it’s such a different show from The Last Airbender. Not worse or better, necessarily, but different!

TLA introduces characters slowly, easing into a serialized format. Korra is going into serialized mode right away, and a lot of these early episodes are just introducing all the characters, their motivations and goals, their relationships. It was a bit disorienting tbh.

Seems like the creators looked at the audience from TLA, projected how far they’d grown up, and tried to make Korra into a show aimed at this (now slightly) older audience. I think they did well, though some of the antics are more appropriate for younger characters imo. I dunno.

And I like that the setting is different, too. The world has really changed from TLA and that’s cool; they’re telling a new story so they needed a new setting.

At this point in TLA, we had: Aang, Katara, Sakka, Zuko, Iroh, and Malfoy’s Dad.

In Korra, we have: Korra, Bolin, Mako, Asami, Tenzin, Lin, Amon, Tenzin’s rival on the council, the car inventor, Tenzin’s family... not to mention the various groups like the White Lotus, the council, the triad gangs, the equalists... its a lot of context to deliver.

But anyway! I like it so far. I like how it took ideas from TLA and extended them:

Toph invents metal bending -> it’s now a tool used widely by the police.

Benders being bullies in Zuko Alone -> gangs of benders now extort businesses for protection money.

Some firebenders can shoot lightning -> this is now a source of electricity for the city.

Aang took away Ozi’s bending -> Amon is now trying to take away everyone’s bending.

I’m, uhh, a bit nervous where they’re going with the class conflict. Like clearly the non-benders *are* being oppressed by benders and the police aren’t stopping them? And the city council is only benders? But we see benders being oppressed economically, too, so there’s an opportunity for solidarity.

Amon is creating an out-group, blaming all problems on them, making them appear simultaneously weak and strong... basically doing a fascism.

My theory so far is, Amon used to be a bender but Aang took it away. Amon claims that a firebender took his parents and then took his face, but only one other character takes faces...

I think Amon went to the spirit world and traded his face to Koh for the ability to take away other’s bending, in retribution for having his own taken away. But we’ll see!

I find it suspicious that everybody’s backstory is “firebenders killed my parents” (Bolin+Mako, Amon, Asami, someone else I think?) so we’ll see what happens there.

It’s a fun show! And a welcome distraction from some problems I’m going through rn 😅

oh cool the “good guys” are doing fascism too keen to see which plays out

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

like why *is* there no non-bender representative on the city council

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

theory: bloodbending doesn’t work on Amon because Amon has no blood 🤔🤨🙃🤔🤔

Book one was good, I’m keen for more.

Started season two.

So why does ONE GUY control all global shipping lanes? hmmm?

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

banished: to the south pole

pretty clearly depicted as “the bad pole, the poor pole”

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

Korra has a pretty legitimate grievance about how now one told her about like spirits and stuff

Bumi is pitching Varrick on a new invention: a jump to conclusions mat. It's a mat with conclusions on it, that you can jump to.

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

really don't like how they keep cutting between intense, end-of-the-world action and slice-of-life bullshit with Tenzin's family

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

season two just has too much shit going on, season one was much more focused. I was really keen on th spirit world stuff but it's honestly just exhausting.

Tenzin wants photos of spiderman, on his desk, by morning!

Okay so season two is done and I’ve realized why this show *feels* so different from The Last Airbender. TLA was one story that all built up to a single conclusion – it’s a great example of economy of storytelling. OTOH, Korra feels like regular TV that has independent seasons which each tells its own story. The scale of everything feels different.

Also: neither is an anime, but Korra is obviously much less of not an anime than The Last Airbender.

I’m near the end of season three and I am kinda disappointed.

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

Earth Queen is killed (sorry! “taken out”) and “rioting and looting” breaks out immediately 🙄

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

They don’t even give us the satisfaction of seeing Combustion Woman self-explode, wtf.

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

whyyyy do they keep rehabilitating the capitalist war criminals

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

season one: communism sucks
season two: environmentalism sucks
season three: anarchy sucks

season four: fascist nationalism sucks, butttt, it’s at least justified

watching The Legend of Korra for the first time

the problems that LoK present are real – there is poverty, and suffering, and oppression. but the show’s every antagonist is depicted as wrong for trying to fix these problems. it’s so bananas.
